During the Spring break of our first year of graduate school at Ohio University, we, Susanna Frohman and Penny De Los Santos, set out to work on a story that combined our backgrounds. Susanna was delivered by midwives in Tennessee twenty-five years ago and Penny spent much of her childhood in a border town in south Texas. We are both pursuing Master of Art degrees in Visual Communications, and are always searching for unique ways to combine newsworthy stories with compelling visual storytelling. The Birthwise Midwifery School, located in Bridgton Maine, was founded in 1994. The Birthwise Midwifery School is one of only a dozen or so accredited/pre-accredited direct-entry midwifery schools in the United States. Since no nursing degree is required, direct-entry midwives can be certified and practicing within 3 years.
