Being a single mom
made it difficult for me to find
opportunities to gain
homebirth experience with local midwives. I wasn’t
willing to be on call day and night and leave my daughter with friends
for an unknown amount of time. I fell in love with midwifery during my
daughter’s
homebirth because it brought us together in love, and I wasn’t
going to let my love of midwifery keep up apart. When my daughter turned
ten and we were ready to spend some time apart, I made plans to work at
Casa for five weeks. While at Casa I was able to work hard and focus my
attention on learning midwifery. Five weeks of living and working at
Casa taught me more about myself and midwifery than five years in a
homebirth practice ever could. I learned something from each of the
seven midwives I had the opportunity to work with as well as the
interns, birth center staff, and families. Currently I’m
a nursing student at Humbodt State University, and I feel that my work
at Casa taught me about caring for client’s
physical and emotional needs than all the years I spent working in
hospitals. I look forward to returning to Casa over the holiday season
and next summer so I can keep up the midwifery skills I learned. Please
feel free to call or e-mail me.
